The residency in Internal Medicine at Lutheran Medical Center is a three-year program specially designed to provide both an extensive foundation in medical knowledge, strong support of critical thinking and a broad experience in both inpatient and outpatient medicine. In addition to ample electives in all subspecialties, residents may take research blocks to prepare them for the most competitive fellowships.
The Lutheran Internal Medicine residency is known for its collegial, low-key atmosphere, superb teaching faculty, extensive conference schedule, and outstanding library and other academic resources. Residents benefit from the size and diversity of the patient population seen in the medical center and in Lutheran Family Health Centers, one of the largest federally qualified community health centers in the country. Moreover, residents are exposed to the resources of the medical center's brand new Emergency Department, Level One Trauma Center, Stroke Center, cardiac catheterization laboratory, and state-of-the-art radiology unit.
Fellowships in hematology/oncology (in partnership with SUNY Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn) and gastroenterology (in partnership with The Brooklyn Hospital Center) add to the learning experience.
