Rusk Rehabilitation at NYU Langone Hospital - Brooklyn Occupational Therapy services include therapeutic treatments for tendon/surgical repairs of the
hand, complications from stroke and other neurological disorders, osteoarthritis and other injuries to the
hand.
Occupational Therapists teach adult and
children patients how to cope with their everyday life tasks. They determine the changes necessary for patients to improve their independence. Computers are used in evaluation and treatment.
Occupational Therapy provides training in daily activities such as hygiene, dressing, showering/bathing and the use of necessary adaptive devices such as wheelchairs, special shoehorns and shoe laces. In addition, training to maneuver from one place to another (i.e. from bed to wheelchair, wheelchair to car) and learning new meal preparation skills with special utensils, help patients adjust to their disability.
Occupational Therapists guide patients through activities to improve strength, endurance, motion, coordination and hand manipulation. They assist patients in maintaining correct posture and joint position through the use of slings and splints. They also teach energy conservation and work simplification techniques to prevent injury.
