May 10, 2013, Brooklyn, NY… NYU Lutheran's Department of Nursing kicked-off Nursing Week with its annual awards ceremony to recognize the continuing hard work, dedication and compassion the Lutheran team exhibits. Lutheran also celebrated Nursing Week with daily events, presentations, guest speakers, a blessing of the hands ceremony, give-aways and much more. Eight special individuals (and one department) were honored with the following awards:
Maakestad Award for Distinguished Nursing Leadership
Teresita Macari, R.N., BSN, Clinical Care Coordinator
Lutheran's highest nursing honor, the Maakestad Award, is presented each year to a distinguished nurse leader who, like Martha Maakestad, advances the profession, influences others in patient care and promotes quality outcomes. Martha was the NYU Lutheran Medical Center nurse leader for 35 years until her retirement in 2004.
Suzette Collins Clinical Excellence
Annmarie Bullen-Lyons, R.N., Pediatrics
Janett Samuels-Crooks, R.N., CPAN, Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit
The Suzette Collins Clinical Excellence award is granted to a Registered Nurse who demonstrates clinical expertise and utilization of evidence-based practices to impact positive patient outcomes. Ms. Collins was a highly respected certified nurse specialist in the care of skin and wounds and the award is named in her memory.
Dhanpat Spirit of Caring
Rose Li, R.N.-BC, 4D, Medical-Surgical Unit
Yonette Wade-Renville, SNA, Surgical Intensive Care Unit
The fourth annual Dhanpat Spirit of Caring Award is given out in remembrance of a much loved member of the Lutheran community who passed away in October 2009. His sincerity and the special attention he devoted to each patient he helped was noted in the hundreds of thank-you letters he received. In a fitting tribute to Dhanpat, the Department of Nursing renamed its lecture series and the Spirit of Caring award in his honor.
Champions for Change
Elaine Meyerson, R.N., AVP, and the Clinical Informatics Department
The Champions for Change are an R.N.-led team that has achieved unit or hospital-wide improvements in patient care, delivery of care systems, or the patient/family experience of care. The award-winning team demonstrates energy, enthusiasm and outcomes in support of our culture of excellence and teamwork.
Nurse of Excellence – FHC
Carolina Braginski, R.N., Women's Health
This award-winning NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers R.N. demonstrates extraordinary clinical practice, actively participates in Service Improvement activities, with a willingness to mentor. This R.N. is a strong patient and family advocate, shows empathy and is a positive role model to others.
Partner in Care – FHC
Janny Wong, LPN, Children's Health
This award is for a non-R.N. NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers staff member who demonstrates outstanding service and compassion as well as consistently develops caring relationships with patients and colleagues.
Friend of Nursing
Steve DiCrescento, AVP, Pharmacy
The Friend of Nursing honor is awarded to a person or group of people who work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and support the Nursing Department in the provision of patient care.
