July 1, 2013, Brooklyn, NY…The NYU Lutheran Medical Center Stroke Center’s Rehabilitation Program has received certification from The Joint Commission, making it the first and only certified stroke rehabilitation program in New York State. This certification demonstrates that Lutheran’s Stroke Rehabilitation Program meets The Joint Commission’s rigorous standards and performance measurements in rehabilitating stroke patients.
“Lutheran Rehabilitation has long been a leader in rehabilitative care,” said Claudia Caine, EVP/COO and hospital director. “This new JC certification speaks directly to the dedication of the entire rehabilitation team that works diligently to incorporate evidence based medicine and best practices in everything that they do.”
NYU Lutheran Medical Center's interdisciplinary Stroke Center, led by Salman Azhar, M.D., is aggressively identifying, targeting and providing stroke treatment and stroke rehabilitation services. The three-pronged approach includes rapid assessment, immediate intervention and comprehensive rehabilitation. By offering the latest neurological rehabilitation exercise techniques, treadmill suspension therapy, acupuncture, spasticity management, Botox injections and vestibular therapy, Lutheran helps patients, even those who had strokes many years ago, regain lost mobility and function.
The Stroke Center has also been named a designated regional Stroke Center by the New York State Department of Health and has previously been designated by The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center. Just last month, the Stroke Center was honored with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s distinguished Get With the Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus achievement award.
