August 31, 2012, Brooklyn, NY…Lutheran executives and Board members recently joined with staff and patients to celebrate the grand opening of Augustana's Chinese Unit.
Located on the fourth floor of the extended care and rehabilitation
facility, the Chinese Unit features Chinese meals and snacks including
traditional homemade Congee, as well as options for Chinese television,
radio stations and newspapers. In order to maintain constant and open
communication with all patients, there are Chinese speaking staff
members on duty around the clock. The unit also features original
artwork by De Chen and Mr. and Mrs. Phat Luong who have previously
created and donated artwork to LMC's Chinese Unit and the
Brooklyn-Chinese Family Health Center. The highlight of the new unit is
the Chinese game room, complete with a traditional mahjong table.
By offering a place for residents and patients to heal where they
feel most comfortable and at home, Augustana aims to improve both their
experiences and their conditions. This unit completes the continuum of
culturally competent care offered to southwest Brooklyn's Chinese
population, who can seek medical treatment at the Brooklyn-Chinese
Family Health Center and NYU Lutheran Medical Center's Chinese Unit.
NYU Lutheran Medical Center is a nationally recognized leader of
culturally competent health care services. LMC is home to Brooklyn's
only Chinese inpatient health care unit. Opened in 2004, the unit offers
multilingual doctors and medical staff available 24 hours a day to
communicate with patients in Mandarin, Cantonese and English, Chinese
meals prepared by a Chinese cook, culturally sensitive color schemes and
health care staff trained in the beliefs and customs of their patients.
Lutheran also opened a new Brooklyn-Chinese Family Health Center in
2011 at 5008 7th Avenue in the heart of Chinatown specifically designed
to meet the needs the city's fastest growing ethnic group. Read more
