Brooklyn facing record temperatures this week, Lutheran is urging local
residents to take precautions against heat-related illness. Below are
some helpful tips to keep yourself and loved ones safe.
• Dress for the heat. Wear
lightweight, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect away some
of the sun's energy. It is also a good idea to wear hats or to use an
• Drink water. Carry water or juice with you and drink
continuously even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and
caffeine, which dehydrate the body.
• Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid high-protein foods, which increase metabolic heat.
• Never leave children, pets, or those who require special care in a parked car during periods of intense summer heat.
At-risk individuals (i.e. the elderly and those with underlying medical
conditions) should use their air conditioner or go to a place with air
conditioning. The City has opened cooling centers in air-conditioned
public facilities for those experiencing physical discomfort in a heat
wave. Residents are urged to call 311 or visit www.nyc.gov to find their local cooling center.
• Engage family members or other support networks to frequently check on at-risk individuals.
• Never leave children unattended while in or around water
• Learn lifesaving techniques like infant and child CPR
• If your child can't swim, stay within arm's reach while he or she is close to the water
