Lutheran HealthCare Team Reports From the Ground in Honduras
The Lutheran HealthCare volunteer team of surgeons, nurses, physician assistants, technicians, and speech/language/hearing experts is busy treating patients on its twelfth medical mission to Honduras. The volunteers will focus on providing life-saving surgeries for children at a local hospital in Tela.

125 Staffers Raise $1,250 for Wear Red Day
In partnership with the American Heart Association, Lutheran HealthCare staff launched heart month activities with its fourth annual Wear Red Day. As part of Lutheran's 125th anniversary year, 125 staff members and visitors gathered to help ring in the special month. Lutheran employees also raised $1,250 in donations for the American Heart Association.

MRSA Education Initiative for Children in Brooklyn Schools
In response to recent staph infections in schools, Lutheran HealthCare, N.Y.C. Councilman Domenic M. Recchia, Jr., Forest City Ratner Companies, the future Brooklyn Nets with former star Albert King, and N.Y.S. State Senator Martin J. Golden will provide alcohol-based hand sanitizers, hand washing tips, and MRSA education to 30,000 students in 37 Brooklyn schools.

Sunset Park Family Health Center's 40th Anniversary Gala
More than 700 people attended the 40th anniversary gala on October 12. With opening remarks from Christine Quinn, speaker of the NYC Council, the event honored the efforts of community health pioneers: George Adams, president emeritus; Harvey Holzberg, executive director emeritus, Senator Robert Menendez and Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez.

Lutheran's Own Unsung Hero
Dhanpat has only one name and no one ever forgets it. "Dhan" as he's called, is Lutheran Medical Center's celebrity Patient Care Technician. In 2006 he was featured in the Daily News as one of "New York's 50 Unsung Heroes." More recently Dhan appeared on "The Art of Living," a television show that showcases people over 60 doing great things.

Alternative Medicine
Katie Allison delivered an 8-pound, 4-ounce baby girl without any medication. Instead she chose acupuncture. The mother of three was selected at random to receive free acupuncture during labor. Lutheran's promising new research suggests acupuncture, when administered during labor and delivery, provides for a smoother labor and fewer Cesarean sections.

Advancements in Orthopedics
Before his accident, Chi Wai Lam went to work every day at a hardware store in Sunset Park, played with his two young children and lived a happy, healthy life. All that changed one winter day in 2006, when his lower left leg was shattered. Chi was rushed to Lutheran's Level I Trauma Center where surgeons spent hours carefully extracting pieces of wood from the wound.
