July 23, 2009, Brooklyn, New York
Lutheran Family Health Centers has been awarded a $350,000 grant through the New York State Commission on National and Community Service and the Corporation for National and Community Service to form the Sunset Park Community Allies, an AmeriCorps initiative focused on providing greater support and more opportunity for youth and families in our neighborhood. The new program, which was announced on June 2 by Senator Charles Schumer, will bring 39 new AmeriCorps members to Sunset Park.
Lutheran Family Health Centers, in partnership with the National Association of Community Health Centers, has sponsored an AmeriCorps program for more than 14 years. The Sunset Park Community HealthCorps team is comprised of 8 full-time volunteers who dedicate a year of their lives to performing community service. The members provide patients with health education, service referrals, translation services and literacy assistance, among other things. If you would like to learn more about the program or how to apply, please contact Heidi Sabers at 718-630-7164.
