LMC SURGEON, TOM LYON, M.D., REPORTING FROM HAITI MEDICAL RELIEF MISSION
First-hand blog posts from quake ravaged town of Pétion-ville are online now
January 27, 2010, Brooklyn, NY
Lutheran's Dr. Tom Lyon, physician chief of Orthopedic Trauma, has joined a team of 19 medical professionals on the ground in Haiti. The relief mission, to help those affected by the Haitian earthquake, is headquarter at Hospital Eleazar Germain in Pétion-ville, a suburb not far from the earthquake's epicenter.
Thousands of volunteers like Dr. Lyon are facing the daunting task of providing life-saving medical care to those in need, under dire circumstances. We have received first-hand accounts from Dr. Lyon of the earthquake-ravaged scenes he has witnessed, as well as the small glimpses of inspiration and hope he's seen.
Although communication is hit or miss, Dr. Lyon has been able to get us updates via e-mail and we will continue to post them as they come in. His e-mails detailing surgery without anesthesia and bargaining at a local hardware store for a hand drill are gripping and emphasize the urgent need for donations, help and prayers for all.
Hospital Eleazar Germain is located in Pétion-ville, a suburb in the hills of the nation's capital. Pétion-ville is part of Port au Prince's metropolitan area and at one time one of the most affluent areas of the city. While Hospital Eleazar Germain survived the tremor, another local Pétion-ville hospital was completley destroyed.
