Adult and Family Education of Lutheran Family Health Centers honored its students last week with Celebration of Achievement ceremonies. Certificates were awarded to 500 students for fulfilling their education goals. Adult and Family Education provides English classes for speakers of other languages (ESOL), basic education and GED preparation classes, and Spanish literacy classes for those looking to advance their education in their native language.
Lutheran Family Health Centers' Adult and Family Education program is committed to supporting adult education and family literacy to prepare its students to carry out their roles as workers, parents, family members, citizens and community participants. The ceremonies included multicultural potluck lunches, class exhibits, poetry readings by three ESOL students, and performances by the Chinese choirs of Lutheran's Shore Hill Senior Housing and Harbor Hill Senior Housing, who sang "Auld Lang Syne" and "America the Beautiful" in English, and "Great China," in Chinese.
Adult and Family Education, established in 1976, is centered on the belief that all adults deserve access to free, high quality basic educational services to help them achieve their goals in life. To this end, we offer classes in English for speakers of others languages, basic education (BE), preparation for the high school equivalence diploma (GED), and computer technology classes. Morning, afternoon and evening and Saturday classes are held at our main site at the Family Support Center as well as at other community sites in Sunset Park and Bay Ridge, including churches, schools, and senior citizen and community centers. Adult and Family Education serves 600 students annually.
The Family Support Center brings seven community programs together under one roof to provide a fully integrated "one-stop shopping" hub for family strengthening services in southwest Brooklyn. To learn more, please call the Family Support Center at 718-630-7186.
