ARTWORK DEDICATION CEREMONY HOSTED BY LMC AND COUNCILWOMAN GONZALEZ
Wall murals and framed artwork enhance LMC Chinese unit

May 28, 2010, Brooklyn, NY
Lutheran Medical Center, Councilwoman Sara M. Gonzalez and the Groundswell Community Mural Project unveiled a new mural and artwork installation in Lutheran's dedicated Chinese inpatient health care unit on Thursday.
The dedication ceremony highlighted a new three-piece mural completed in collaboration with students from the Sunset Park High School and the Groundswell Community Mural Project.
The ceremony also included the unveiling of 21 paintings by De Chen, a resident at Shore Hill (a Lutheran HealthCare senior residence), and a special performance from the Shore Hill Chinese Choir.
The brightly colored murals portray traditional Chinese cranes, a symbol of longevity. The 21-piece installation by De Chen features an array of landscapes and Chinese characters. The new artwork is designed to comfort patients while making them feel more at home.
Lutheran is home to Brooklyn's only Chinese inpatient health care unit, designed to specifically meet the needs of one of the city's fastest growing ethnic groups. Opened in 2004, the unit offers multilingual doctors and medical staff available 24 hours a day to communicate with patients in Mandarin, Cantonese and English, Chinese meals prepared by a Chinese cook, culturally sensitive color schemes and health care staff trained in the beliefs and customs of their patients.
This mural project was made possible by Councilwoman Sara M. Gonzalez through the N.Y.C. Department of Youth and Community Development, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York City Council, Cultural After School Adventures Initiative.
