LFHC RECEIVES CDC GRANT FOR HIV PREVENTION IN SUNSET PARK

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LFHC RECEIVES CDC GRANT FOR HIV PREVENTION IN SUNSET PARK

August 30, 2010, Brooklyn, NY…Lutheran Family Health Centers (LFHC) has recently been awarded a $315,000 grant from the Centers for Disease Control to support "Proyecto Nuevos Pasos" (New Steps Project), the integrated system of HIV prevention.

The funds received will cover the hiring of HIV testers and social workers for five years, who will test over 1,000 people per year and identify individuals at high risk for getting HIV in the Sunset Park community. The target populations of this program are undocumented Dominican and Mexican immigrants who are at risk for acquiring HIV and may avoid accessing medical care. Proyecto Nuevos Pasos will act as the front door to LFHC's primary care system and comprehensive HIV/AIDS services, treatment and support and will be provided at five LFHC sites.

This grant is part of a total of $42 million awarded to 133 community-based organizations across the country by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help implement HIV prevention efforts among populations at greatest risk. LFHC is the only agency in southwest Brooklyn that provides comprehensive HIV services, and one of only 42 in the state of New York.
