LUTHERAN BREAKS GROUND ON NEW BROOKLYN-CHINESE FAMILY HEALTH CENTER WITH HELP FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND ELECTED OFFICIALS
October 8, 2010, Brooklyn, NY
Lutheran Family Health Centers (LFHC) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday to celebrate the construction of the new Brooklyn-Chinese Family Health Center. The event was attended by more than 75 neighbors, patients, staff, community leaders and elected officials. Speakers included (in order) Reverend Samuel Fook Wong, chair, Sunset Park Health Council, Inc.; Larry K. McReynolds, executive director, Lutheran Family Health Centers; Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, N.Y.S. Senator Diane Savino and N.Y.S. Assemblyman Félix Ortiz.
"We are grateful for the support of the community and our elected officials in this endeavor. In particular, I'd like to thank Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez for supporting the federal stimulus bill which helped make this new health center possible," said Larry K. McReynolds. "This new site will increase jobs in our community and also expand access to primary care in a culturally sensitive manner – two things we can all agree are necessary for a healthy Brooklyn."
Additional special guests included Wendy Z. Goldstein, president and CEO, Lutheran HealthCare; Emma Graeber Porter, chair, LHC Board of Trustees; Randolph Peers, executive director of Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow and chair of Community Board 7; and a representative from Councilwoman Sara Gonzalez's office.
To date, over $68,000 has been raised to support the new site. Lead donors include King Fook Funeral Services, LLC, Manning's 8th Avenue Pharmacy, Inc. and Sunrise Medical Laboratories, Inc. Additional sponsors include Bay Ridge Medical Imaging, P.C.; IW Pharmacy, Inc.; Wan Sou Funeral Services; Bravocare Management, Inc.; Chinese American Planning Council; GI Liver Diagnostic, LLC; and Samson Capital Advisors, LLC.
Donations are still being accepted and naming opportunities are available. Please contact Jeanne Solitario for more information at 718-630-6225. Donations can also be made online at http://www.lutheranfamilyhealthcenters.org/ by clicking on "giving opportunities" and following the links to make an online contribution (be sure to designate the gift to Brooklyn-Chinese Family Health Center).
The new site, at 5008 7th Avenue in the heart of Chinatown, will be twice the size of the current clinic and specifically designed to meet the needs of one of the city's fastest growing ethnic groups. It is expected to open in the spring of 2011. LFHC's Brooklyn-Chinese Family Health Center was established ten years ago to provide high-quality, affordable health care to the growing Asian population in southwest Brooklyn.
