LUTHERAN MEDICAL CENTER NURSES THANKED FOR THEIR COMPASSIONATE CARE
November 19, 2010, Brooklyn, NY…On November 11, the Lutheran Medical Center (LMC) nursing staff was visited by Bonnie and Mark Barnes, co-founders of the DAISY Foundation. The Barnes' not only presented this month's DAISY Award, but also spoke of their founding of the organization and their everlasting appreciation of the compassionate work done by nurses.
The DAISY Foundation and its monthly awards were created in loving memory of J. Patrick Barnes, Bonnie and Mark's son who died at age 33 of complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. At the end of his life, Patrick spent eight weeks in the hospital. It was throughout this time that the Barnes family was astounded by the compassionate and kind care they received from nursing staff. While they expected knowledgeable nurses, they were surprised by their exceptional kindness. Bonnie Barnes stated, "There is no hug like a nurse's hug."
LMC is one of almost 700 hospitals that honors its nurses with monthly DAISY Awards. Lutheran has given monthly awards to exceptional members of its nursing staff since March 2010.
