LUTHERAN FAMILY HEALTH CENTERS COMMEMORATES WORLD AIDS DAY WITH COUNCILWOMAN GONZALEZ
Universal access and human rights addressed through poetry and performance
December 14, 2010, Brooklyn, NY
Lutheran Family Health Centers (LFHC) Special Care Immunology Services (SCIS) commemorated World AIDS Day 2010 on December 1 with presentations and performances from staff and patients. The event was coordinated by the SCIS Community Advisory Board, which is made up of patients.
Topics of discussion included how stigma affects the health of those living with HIV and their loved ones, the importance of testing and intervention, and the need for universal access. The event included reflections on HIV/AIDS in song and poetry. This is the sixth year that Lutheran has recognized World AIDS Day with commemorative and educational events.
Councilwoman Sara M. Gonzalez spoke to staff and patients about her lifelong commitment to fight HIV/AIDS. She addressed the stigma and remembered those whose has been taken. Gonzalez is a well-known local HIV/AIDS activist who spearheaded the movement for HIV/AIDS education and prevention in Southwest Brooklyn in the late 1980s.
Lutheran's SCIS is an HIV/AIDS primary and specialty care program. It is the only New York State Department of Health Designated AIDS Center in southwest Brooklyn. Founded in 1988, this Ryan White Title III–funded program offers both inpatient and outpatient services. Those services include culturally sensitive, comprehensive, quality HIV testing, HIV/AIDS primary care services and co-located gynecological, specialist, mental health, case management, support group, nutrition, treatment adherence and nursing services. Our providers are all HIV Specialists registered with New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute.
