SUNSET PARK ALLIANCE FOR YOUTH NAMED A FINALIST IN NATIONWIDE COMPETITION
January 7, 2011, Brooklyn, NY...The Sunset Park Alliance for Youth, of which the Lutheran Family Health Centers (LFHC) network is a founding partner, has been named a semifinalist for the 2011 Collaboration Prize from the Lodestar Foundation.
LFHC's Community-Based Programs
Lutheran Family Health Centers' Department of Community-Based Programs is grounded in LFHC's holistic orientation to community health - the concept that health depends on such factors as psychosocial, familial, economic, housing, educational and employment status. For more than 30 years, Community-Based Programs has offered a broad range of culturally competent, multilingual services to low-income families through an integrated system of educational, vocational and supportive services for children, youth, families, and older adults. The department's programming includes three day care centers, two school-aged educational programs, a multi-service youth development center, a family support center offering supportive counseling, case management and adult literacy services, as well as a range of health and wellness programs serving the needs of older adults.

Sunset Park Alliance for Youth Named a Semifinalist in Lodestar Foundation's 2011 Collaboration Prize
The Alliance is the only semifinalist in New York City
PHOENIX, AZ and BROOKLYN, NY, January 5, 2011 – Sunset Park Alliance for Youth has been selected as a semifinalist for the 2011 Collaboration Prize created by The Lodestar Foundation, an organization dedicated to maximizing the growth and impact of philanthropy. Each of the 20 semifinalists, chosen from over 800 submissions, represents a successful collaboration created between two or more nonprofit organizations. 20 semifinalists recognized for successful and innovative partnerships; Eight finalists to be selected and awarded a total of $250,000.
"The Sunset Park Alliance for Youth is honored to be selected as a semifinalist for the 2011 Collaboration Prize. The collaborative efforts from our partners and community stakeholders are focused on the goal of strengthening our 'One Neighborhood' model and taking responsibility for the young adults in our communities and ensuring that they are given every opportunity to succeed," said Stacie Sanchez, Director, Sunset Park Alliance for Youth. "The Alliance is a wonderful example of a successful grass roots collaboration and to be named New York City's only semifinalist is a huge boost to the long-term impact we would like to make in the community."

About Sunset Park Alliance for Youth
The Sunset Park Alliance for Youth is a group of community-based agencies currently serving, in aggregate, approximately 1,300 disconnected young adults in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The Alliance's six members are the Center for Family Life in Sunset Park, Brooklyn Workforce Innovations (BWI)/Fifth Avenue Committee, Lutheran Family Health Centers, Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow (OBT), Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation (SBIDC), and Turning Point. Our higher education partner, Kingsborough Community College (CUNY) partners with the Alliance on the provision of needed college access and prep services for young adults.
The mission of the Sunset Park Alliance for Youth is to reconnect out-of-school and out-of-work youth, ages 16 – 24, back to the classroom and workplace through coordinated case management, literacy services and job skills training and placement. Through collaboration, comprehensive service delivery and committed community partners, the Alliance is effectively and proactively taking steps to eradicate the complex issue of disconnected youth in Sunset Park. The Alliance was selected as a semifinalist because of the commitment and investment shown by the leaders of the member agencies, the unique program models we have developed, the resources we have attracted, and the results we have achieved. The Alliance receives funding from Brooklyn Community Foundation, Clark Foundation, JobsFirst NYC, New York Community Trust and the Tiger Foundation. In addition, the Alliance is funded by the New York State Education Department to operate the Sunset Park Literacy Zone.
About The 2011 Collaboration Prize
The collaboration must involve two or more nonprofit organizations. Each collaboration will be judged on the extent to which it demonstrates improved effectiveness in achieving social good; more effectively uses human and financial resources; represents an innovative response to a specific challenge or opportunity; and exhibits characteristics that would demonstrate that the collaboration is a model for the field, sector, or community.
Out of these 20 semifinalists, the Selection Panel – a group chaired by Sterling Speirn, president and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and comprised of elite philanthropists and leaders of major philanthropic foundations – will choose eight finalists who will receive $12,500 and the grand prize winner, to be chosen from among the eight, will receive an additional $150,000. The finalists will be announced in early February 2011 and the grand prize winner will be announced in April 2011.
