COUNCILWOMAN GONZALEZ AWARDS BILINGUAL NURSES FOR BROOKLYN SCHOLARSHIPS AT LUTHERAN MEDICAL CENTER
March 3, 2011, Brooklyn, NY…On February 17 Councilwoman Sara M. Gonzalez paid a visit to Lutheran Medical Center to join Wendy Z. Goldstein, president and CEO, and Rosanne Raso, SVP, Nursing, in presenting the Bilingual Nurses for Brooklyn education award to two nursing students.
The Bilingual Nurses for Brooklyn scholarship program assists Lutheran in providing our diverse patient population with a culturally competent, highly qualified and compassionate nursing workforce. Nurses who speak the patient's language and understand the patient's culture can serve as a life-saving liaison when navigating difficult care issues.
Alexander Shilov and Nereida Silverio were each awarded $3,500. These funds provide financial assistance to bilingual nursing students enrolled in a N.Y.C. nursing program. In return, the award recipients agree to one year of employment upon graduation. Alexander is currently a student at Kingsborough Community College and was praised for his amazing character and ambition. Nereida has been with the Lutheran family for over 11 years. She serves as a unit clerk on 3B and is completing her BSN at Molloy College.
