Foundress Sister Elisabeth Fedde's Norwegian clock joins Lutheran's historical archives

April 15, 2011, Brooklyn, NY….On April 8, Lutheran HealthCare (LHC) celebrated its 128 year legacy by blessing and dedicating the Norwegian grandfather clock that LHC foundress Sister Elisabeth Fedde brought with her from Norway when she arrived in New York on April 8, 1883.

The important symbol of faith-based heritage had been handed down through generations by deaconesses and nurses, the last of whom, Esther Lieurance, R.N., was a 1961 graduate of Lutheran Medical Center's School of Nursing. Sister Fedde's clock will remain prominently displayed in Lutheran's heritage gallery.

The clock dedication ceremony was the culminating event of Lutheran's Mission Week. "Mission Week creates a chance to reflect on where we came from and why we continue to exist," said Don Stiger, SVP, Mission and Spiritual Care. "Our mission, 'LHC has no reason for being of its own; it exists only to serve the needs of its neighborhoods,' directly reflects our superb combination of cultural competence, technology, clinical excellence and sound business practice with a tradition of compassionately caring for the whole person and our whole community."
