LUTHERAN FAMILY HEALTH CENTERS PARTNERS WITH GROUNDSWELL COMMUNITY MURAL PROJECT TO CREATE SUNSET PARK FHC MURAL
June 9, 2011, Brooklyn, NY…Lutheran Family Health Centers (LFHC) and Groundswell Community Mural Project hosted a dedication ceremony and reception on June 7 to unveil a 22 foot long mural which now welcomes patients to the Sunset Park Family Health Center. The bright design explores the history of the Sunset Park FHC through pictures of the people who have made the center what it is today. Imagery in the mural is derived from portraits of individuals who have been important to the center, who live in the community, and doctors who have dedicated their lives to helping people in the neighborhood.
This spring, 17 young people worked with artists Yana Dimitrova and Sophia Dawson to create a large canvas mural for the center's main lobby. The project began in the fall of 2010, as part of Groundswell's Teen Empowerment Mural Apprenticeship (TEMA) program, where young people train as apprentice artists and create commissioned work for community based organizations.
The dedication ceremony was attended by the youth artists and executives of Groundswell Community Mural Project and Lutheran Family Health Centers. The teenagers spoke about their hopes for the mural to bring happiness to the patients of the Sunset Park FHC for years to come and how the design illustrates the diversity and unity of the Sunset Park community.
