LFHC CELEBRATES NATIONAL HEALTH CENTER WEEK WITH WELLNESS FAIRS, ART SHOWS, STAFF LUNCHEONS AND VISITS FROM ELECTED OFFICIALS
August 19, 2011, Brooklyn, NY
Lutheran Family Health Centers (LFHC) celebrated National Health Center Week with a number of events including health inspired art and community screenings which were attended by local elected officials, board members, staff and neighbors.
To kick-off the week's festivities, a health and wellness fair was held on Lutheran Lane on August 9. Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez addressed the crowd about the importance of medical homes like LFHC. Larry K. McReynolds, executive director, LFHC, presented Congresswoman Velazquez with a plaque from the National Association of Community Health Centers, as she was recognized as a 2011 Distinguished Community Health Advocate. The fair featured a number of free health screenings, interactive games, health trivia contests and giveaways. The staff of eleven LFHC sites also participated in a photo contest to judge who best decorated their given booths to illustrate NHCW. Click here to view the full Facebook album. (See winners below!)
A second health and wellness fair was held on August 11 in Rainbow Park. This fair, hosted by the newly-opened Brooklyn-Chinese Family Health Center, featured free blood pressure screenings and health information and was attended by a number of neighbors. In addition, two LFHC sites also took NHCW as an opportunity to thank their dedicated staff for the work they do every day by hosting special luncheons.

LFHC also partnered with MarbleRoad, an organization that connects people who have complex illnesses with the resources they need, in a unique fundraising event. On August 11, MarbleRoad hosted The Flammable Heart Exhibition featuring a special private showing to highlight artists and their work inspired by health care experiences. Ten percent of proceeds on the event will benefit LFHC in honor of National Health Center Week.
The second week of August each year is dedicated to recognizing the service and contributions of community, migrant, homeless and public housing health centers in providing access to affordable, high quality, cost-effective health care to medically vulnerable and underserved people in the U.S. This year's theme is "Celebrating America's Health Centers: Serving Locally, Leading Nationally." This theme highlights the more than 45 year record of health centers in providing affordable, high quality, cost-effective health care to all people, regardless of ability to pay.
