BROOKLYN-CHINESE FAMILY HEALTH CENTER HOSTS ARTWORK DEDICATION CEREMONY
Members of Brooklyn's Chinese community donate art to comfort patients
November 17, 2011, Brooklyn, NY
Lutheran Family Health Centers (LFHC) network, its board members and community leaders joined together to unveil a new artwork installation at the Brooklyn-Chinese Family Health Center. The event, hosted by Larry K. McReynolds, executive director, LFHC, and Rev. Samuel Fook Wong, president, LFHC Board of Trustees, featured the artwork dedication as well as a special performance by the Shore Hill Chinese Choir.
The ceremony celebrated the new artwork, which was created and donated by members of Brooklyn's Chinese community and designed to comfort patients while making them feel more at home. The artwork includes an intricate origami peacock display by Phat Luong and his wife, Lee-How Ngo. The 27"x 20" paper sculpture is constructed out of 1,300 red envelopes, traditionally given out during holidays or special occasions to symbolize good luck and ward off evil spirits. The couple, who reside at Lutheran's Sunset Gardens residence, spent eight months creating the origami peacock sculpture.
Additionally, De Chen, a resident at Lutheran's Shore Hill Housing, created eight pieces of original framed artwork. In 2010, De Chen donated 21 original paintings to Lutheran Medical Center's Chinese Inpatient Unit. (Click here for more information.) The ceremony also featured a performance from the Shore Hill Chinese Choir.
The Brooklyn-Chinese Family Health Center was established by LFHC to meet the health care needs of the growing Asian population in southwest Brooklyn. For nearly ten years the center has been a leader in providing high-quality, affordable and culturally competent health care to the Asian-American community.
