LUTHERAN SURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS INSTITUTE ONCE AGAIN NAMED A BARIATRIC SURGERY CENTER OF EXCELLENCE
Designation granted by American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Surgical Review Corporation
December 15, 2011, Brooklyn, NY
The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) have once again named Lutheran Medical Center (LMC) a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. As part of this designation, the bariatric surgical review committee has extended Lutheran's accreditation for two more years.
The continued certification demonstrates that Lutheran's Surgical Weight Loss Institute, under the leadership of George S. Ferzli, M.D., F.A.C.S., chair of the Department of Surgery, meets the rigorous standards and performance measures set forth by ASMBS and SRC. Lutheran's Surgical Weight Loss Institute is also a New York State Designated Bariatric Surgery Center for Medicaid in N.Y.C. This means that patients (including those using Medicaid and Medicare) can be reimbursed for this life-saving surgery at a medical center with one of the highest standards of quality. In addition, Lutheran Medical Center is a fully accredited level 1B center by the American College of Surgeons.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, obesity continues to be a significant public health problem. Weight loss surgery can be a life-saving option for those who are severely/morbidly obese (100 pounds overweight or more). It has also proven to help control and manage weight related health problems like type-2 diabetes.
As the country faces a growing obesity epidemic with increasing numbers of patients in need, the leadership of the ASMBS established the centers of excellence program to help surgeons and hospitals reach optimal levels of performance and to recognize those centers that consistently demonstrate exceptional patient outcomes. The SRC, which administrates the ASMBS centers of excellence program, is a not-for-profit organization comprised of a board of governors and a respected bariatric surgery review committee. The SRC determines policies and provides expertise to evaluate bariatric surgical programs nationally.
