LUTHERAN HEALTHCARE RINGS IN THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON WITH CHINESE NEW YEAR FESTIVITIES
WHO/WHAT: Lutheran HealthCare will be ringing in the Chinese New Year in style! Festivities will include the traditional lion dance performed by members of the Brooklyn Chinese-American Association (BCA), as well as performances by preschoolers from BCA's daycare program. Traditional oranges and red envelopes representing good luck and prosperity will be distributed as well. After the performances, traditional Chinese food will be served. The Visiting Nurse Service of New York will be present at the celebration as well and will be handing out informational materials and will raffle off a gift basket for attendees of the event.
The celebration will also feature a special dedication of an origami red envelope dragon statue, created by Phat Luong and his wife, Lee-How Ngo, who reside at Lutheran's Sunset Gardens residence. After the dedication, the piece of artwork will be transported to Lutheran Medical Center's Chinese inpatient unit. Phat Luong and Lee-How Ngo have previously donated handmade artwork to Lutheran's Brooklyn-Chinese Family Health Center.
The event will be emceed by Rick Chou, D.O., president, Medical and Dental Staff.

Lutheran is home to Brooklyn's only Chinese inpatient health care unit. Opened in 2004, the unit offers multilingual doctors and medical staff available 24 hours a day to communicate with patients in Mandarin, Cantonese and English, Chinese meals prepared by a Chinese cook, culturally sensitive color schemes and health care staff trained in the beliefs and customs of their patients. Lutheran also opened a new Brooklyn-Chinese Family Health Center in 2011 at 5008 7th Avenue in the heart of Chinatown specifically designed to meet the needs of one of the city's fastest growing ethnic groups.
