LUTHERAN MEDICAL CENTER WELCOMES NEW CHINESE COMMUNITY LIAISON

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LUTHERAN MEDICAL CENTER WELCOMES NEW CHINESE COMMUNITY LIAISON
Unique program meets the needs of the city's fastest growing ethnic group

August 24, 2012, Brooklyn, NY…
Lutheran Medical Center is proud to welcome Weijing Shi aboard as the new Chinese community liaison. Lutheran's unique community liaison program matches patients with same-culture coordinators who work as patient representatives and community navigators to assist and support patients in each step of their health care journey. They serve as a liaison between patients, care givers and members of the community to assist as needed.

Ms. Shi was previously the director of the Brooklyn branch of the Chinese American Planning Council (CPC) and is well known in the Chinese and Sunset Park communities. In addition to her community experience, she has worked in health care as a social worker at Charles B. Wang Health Center (a federally qualified health center in Manhattan's Chinatown) prior to working at CPC. Since 1996, Ms. Shi has been dedicated to cultural, social and clinical work in the Chinese communities both within New York and abroad.

Ms. Shi obtained a bachelor's degree in Chinese language and arts in China as well as a bachelor's degree in information systems from Monroe College. She obtained her master's degree from the Silver School of Social Work at New York University.

Lutheran Medical Center is a nationally recognized leader of culturally competent health care services. LMC is home to Brooklyn's only Chinese inpatient health care unit. Opened in 2004, the unit offers multilingual doctors and medical staff available 24 hours a day to communicate with patients in Mandarin, Cantonese and English, Chinese meals prepared by a Chinese cook, culturally sensitive color schemes and health care staff trained in the beliefs and customs of their patients. Lutheran also opened a new Brooklyn-Chinese Family Health Center in 2011 at 5008 7th Avenue in the heart of Chinatown specifically designed to meet the needs the city's fastest growing ethnic group.
