LUTHERAN COMMEMORATES WORLD AIDS DAY WITH ELECTED OFFICIALS AND AWARD CEREMONY
December 11, 2012, Brooklyn, NY
Lutheran Family Health Centers' Achieve Clinic commemorated World AIDS Day with a special event on November 30 featuring song, dance, theatre and poetry performances as well as visits from Assemblyman Felix Ortiz and Councilwoman Sara M. Gonzalez and a special award ceremony.

World AIDS Day 2012 was officially commemorated on December 1. Staff and patients from Lutheran's Achieve Clinic, a general medical primary care program that provides HIV care, rapid testing, treatment adherence counseling, HIV prevention, education services and more, joined together to recognize the advancements made in HIV/AIDS treatments and preventions while honoring and remembering those who have lost their lives in the epidemic.
CAMBA and Mixteca were honored with Community Partnership Awards while a Community Advisory Board (CAB) member received the first annual Eugene Cartagena Service Award. Eugene Cartagena was a patient in the Achieve Clinic for over 20 years. Eugene became chairperson of the CAB in 2002 and worked tirelessly during and even after his tenure to advocate and improve the services for all HIV+ patients at Lutheran Family Health Centers. Eugene died in 2011 but his legacy of devoted service, his fighting spirit and his interest in helping others deal with HIV/AIDS lives on. The Eugene Cartagena Service Award is given in his memory to an individual that embodies those same characteristics of caring and compassion for others that Eugene displayed throughout his life.
Both Assemblyman Ortiz and Councilwoman Gonzalez praised Lutheran for its work in the community to raise awareness of HIV preventing and testing. Performances included songs and poetry reading by Lutheran staff members, a skit by CAMBA's Anti-Stigma Theatre Troupe and a traditional Mexican dance by members of the Quetzalcoatl Dance Group.
