STUDENTS, PARENTS, STAFF AND BOARD MEMBERS ADVOCATE FOR LUTHERAN'S SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH CENTERS
February 12, 2013, Brooklyn, NY
Today, over 100 people from Lutheran Family Health Centers' School Health Program - including staff and board members as well as students and their families – have traveled to Albany to attend a school-based health center advocacy day. Participants are meeting with state elected officials about raising the awareness of the impact that school-based health centers have on communities across the state and ensuring their survival. February also marks National School-Based Health Care Awareness Month.
Representatives from six of Lutherans' schools have joined the group, including PS 307, PS/MS 282, Dewey MS 136/MS 821, IS 88, Sunset Park High School and Erasmus High School.
Did you know that Lutheran Family Health Centers' School Health Program provides medical, mental health and/or dental services to children in 21 schools in Sunset Park, Park Slope, East Flatbush, DUMBO, Red Hook, Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island? Services include physical examinations, immunizations, asthma and other chronic disease management, dental screenings, mental health counseling, health education, and other services. Teams of nurse practitioners and medical assistants work in the schools with psychologists, social workers, dental staff, and others to provide comprehensive services.
Since 1984, the LFHC network has offered Brooklyn schools a comprehensive school-based health centers program. Lutheran currently has 32 school-based health centers that are open during regular school hours. School-based health centers offer the following advantages:
• Appointments can be made by calling or visiting the school-based health center
• Parents and students will miss fewer school or work days
• There are no out-of-pocket costs for services provided on-site
• All students will receive care even if they don't have insurance
