Lutheran is home to Brooklyn's only Chinese inpatient health care unit. Opened in 2004, the unit offers multilingual doctors and medical staff available 24 hours a day to communicate with patients in Mandarin, Cantonese and English, Chinese meals prepared by a Chinese cook, culturally sensitive color schemes and health care staff trained in the beliefs and customs of their patients. Lutheran also opened a new Brooklyn-Chinese Family Health Center in 2011 at 5008 7th Avenue in the heart of Chinatown specifically designed to meet the needs of one of the city's fastest growing ethnic groups. A new Chinese unit at Augustana opened in August 2012 to provide a comfortable, culturally sensitive environment for health and healing to the senior members.
