SENIORS CELEBRATE NATIONAL WHEELCHAIR BEAUTIFICATION MONTH - MARDI GRAS STYLE
August 2, 2013, Brooklyn, NY
Twenty-five seniors at the Shore Hill Neighborhood Center commemorated National Wheelchair Beautification Month with a special wheelchair parade on July 31. The parade also included decorated canes, walkers and of course wheelchairs. The seniors even ranked each other for the best decorated equipment with 101-year old Goldie Sohn taking first place. In total, more than 100 people attended this year's eighth annual event.
Lutheran's Services for Older Adults Program has hosted the wheelchair parade since 2005. Ursula Clarke, coordinator of the yearly event, recalls how it all started: "I got the idea looking through a holiday observance list and discovered there was a month dedicated to wheelchair beautification. I always wanted to do something exciting that would make people happy and I thought how neat it would be."
Kelly Lavin, a Lutheran volunteer, remarked: "It was a spectacular day, it was great, and energetic. I didn't expect it to be so lively. This was my first time experiencing the event and definitely won't be my last!"
Lutheran Family Health Centers' Services for Older Adults Program offers a wide variety of services, events and classes geared toward our community's older adults. Upcoming classes include arthritis exercise classes, dancing classes, computer classes, tai chi, painting, yoga and much more.
