N.Y.S. GOVERNOR CUOMO ANNOUNCES $3.7 MILLION AWARD TO LUTHERAN FAMILY HEALTH CENTERS FOR ONGOING SUPERSTORM SANDY SERVICES
Federal grant to provide health care services support to storm-affected neighborhoods in Coney Island
October 15, 2013, Brooklyn, NY
Lutheran Family Health Centers (LFHC), a federally qualified health center, will be awarded $3.7 million by N.Y.S. through the federal Superstorm Sandy Social Services Block Grant to continue aid to Sandy-affected populations. The grant includes funding for the capital costs of renovating and outfitting a health center, as well as start-up operational costs of providing medical, behavioral health, health education, and case management/outreach primarily targeted to residents of public housing developments in Coney Island.
Coney Island was among the hardest hit areas by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The area still suffers from severely limited access to primary care services, as well as high rates of chronic medical conditions. As part of its strategic plan, the LFHC network strives to create new access points in the community to ensure that high quality health care is available and accessible to all New York City residents.
"It's been one year in the making since Sandy swept through New York, and one year later access to health care in hard-hit areas like Coney Island is still greatly needed," said Larry McReynolds, LFHC executive director. "LFHC thanks Governor Cuomo and New York State for the support. Receiving the grant acknowledges that our family health centers are an effective model of delivering high quality care and will benefit our post-Sandy neighborhoods in the long-run."
A total of 15 New York health groups will receive $200 million of federal funds to offset costs incurred during and after Superstorm Sandy, announced by the N.Y.S. governor's office on October 10. See more for a listing of the grants online here.
