Lutheran Family Health Centers 45th Anniversary Video

October 2012 marked Lutheran Family Health Centers' 45th anniversary. The Sunset Park Family Health Center opened its doors in October 1967 (located where today's Sunset Terrace FHC stands). Throughout a period of urban decay in southwest Brooklyn, the SPFHC served as a beacon of hope for patients in need of medical care. Today, the LFHC network consists of nine primary care sites, 31 school-based health centers and dental clinics and 14 community medicine program sites.

In addition to highlighting our growth, this video focuses on that which is most meaningful to us and tells our story most clearly -- the people we serve. Thank you to everyone who generously agreed to share their journeys and reflect on the roles that Lutheran has played in their lives.

Denise Jones, an outreach coordinator with the Community Medicine Program, understands the positions her clients are in. She entered the Lutheran Community Medicine Program after falling on hard times, losing her job and ultimately her home. LFHC not only helped Denise to get her life back, it also offered her the opportunity to learn how to help others. As an outreach coordinator Denise now works to give back to the community. "Being able to help those who are in a situation like myself, it's rewarding," explained Denise. "The homeless community would be lost without Lutheran."

Devonnie Thomson was a disengaged youth who faced struggles and distractions in school and was bullied. After dropping out, the staff at Project Reach Youth reached out to Devonnie, a participant in the youth program. Through the staff's intervention, Devonnie was able to get back on track. Lutheran aided him in getting his GED and a job. "They told me I could do it, that I could make something of myself," explained a hopeful Devonnie. "In five years I could see myself as a paramedic or a nurse for Lutheran."
