The Sunset Park Health Council is the governing board for the Lutheran Family Health Centers (LFHC). The majority of its members are community residents who use the services of the Health Center. The remaining members represent various community agencies, or are professionals in their field including security, teaching and public services.
The mission of the Sunset Park Health Council has always been to take an active role to assure the total well-being of the community it serves, through the Lutheran Family Health Centers, is provided with family oriented primary care along with educational programs and a wide scope of community-based initiatives.
The governing board is responsible for the entire LFHC delivery system. It is fully involved in all program aspects including strategic planning, policy-making, review of the annual budget, monitoring and evaluating health center operations. The board meets regularly with the LFHC executive director, medical director and financial director. The council was incorporated as a Type B corporation under section 201 of the Not-For-Profit Corporation Law on July 31, 1975.
The Annual Children's Christmas Event, now in its 32nd year, takes place in December. Each year during the Holiday Season, Santa Claus visits the Lutheran Family Health Centers to individually greet the children and surprise them with a gift. Thousands of gifts are distributed to the Lutheran Family Health Center patients. The children's ages range from newborn to eight years old. The success of this event is attributable to generous donations and various fund raising activities.
