April 14, 2014, Brooklyn, NY … Lutheran Family Health Centers’ Services for Older Adults hosted Grandparents’ Safety Awareness Day Events on April 9 and 11. The community events, held at Sunset Park Neighborhood Center and Shore Hill Neighborhood Center, were attended by hundreds of caregivers and grandparents who received tips to prevent accidents at home or on the road like the importance of carrying emergency contacts, consulting with one’s doctor about any new medications and much more. Participants also received blood pressure screenings and prizes.
Pictured are Sunset Park residents with representatives from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). The FDNY gave away hundreds of oven mittens and demonstrated how the mitten is to be properly worn when handling hot items.
Dorothy Baffuto, a great, great grandmother, shared her advice on fire safety: “Never leave cooking food unattended!”
This effort was also made possible with the support of Safe Kids New York City, Lutheran’s Trauma Department, FDNY, N.Y.C. Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and HealthPlus Amerigroup.
